The breeding usually aims at the fineness of the fiber, though colors, density, and length of the coat, personality and health are also important in purebred animals. The major producer of the fiber is Peru, the land from where these animals originated.

These unique animals can be used as a source of the finest fiber, bred for sale, for stud cervices, be loving family companions and take part in different competitions and parades. Purebred animals and champions can be very expensive (up to $20,000). An alpaca show will feature pictures from each entries farm.
