In the mid 1800s the quality of the animal’s fiber was rediscovered. Other members of the camelid family are llama, guanaco, and vicuna, all of them living in the wild in South America. Llamas are used as pack animals; rough clothing is made of their fiber.

This animal is a member of the camelid family, which originated 40 million years ago. The animal was domesticated around 5,000 years ago in South America and was bred to provide fine clothing for Inca Royalty. The breed was close to extinction after the Spanish conquest.
