The historical range of these animals is jungle, marsh lands, grasslands and rocky countries of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Burma. They are listed as endangered and protected by CITES. There are only about 3000 of these animals left in the world, whereas at the beginning of the 20th century there were about 40,000 species. Throughout the past century, they have been hunted for pelts and body parts that are used in traditional Asiatic medicines. It has been counted that today at least one species is being killed by poachers.

The animals of this species are characterized by reddish orange coat with narrow black, brown or gray stripes in a vertical direction. The underside is creamy or white with black stripes. There exist several rare variants: white, red, albino, black and stripeless individuals. They are strong and agile predators and feed on deer, antelopes, swine, buffalo and domestic cattle. They rarely attack humans and usually avoid contact with them. They are solitary animals, but may cooperate in hunting in areas where food is scarce.
