These wild cats are found throughout India from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin. Other races of these animals can be found in Burma, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Bali. They inhabit dense thickets, long grass, and tamarisk shrubs along river banks. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 40,000 wild animals on the planet, and now there are less than 5,000 species left. A hundred years ago, there were 8 subspecies. The Bali, Caspian and Javan became extinct by the 1950s, and now we have five subspecies left in the world.

The males of these animals are larger than females. An average weight of the males is 500 lb, and females weigh 300 lb. The length of the males is 10 feet, and females are 9 feet. These animals live not more than 15 years in the wild. In zoos and in national parks they can live up to 17 years. Captive animals are fed horsemeat, beef, pork and so forth. Although they enjoy a much richer diet than their wild counterparts, they are less capable of hunting and may not survive in their natural habitat. However, it is absolutely imperative that these felines be introduced to wild life, as the number of wild species continues to decrease.
