There are about 300 of them living in zoos and in private ownership. It has become a matter of prestige to own such a unique animal, and prices for them are very high, averaging at $60,000. Inbreeding has caused many problems, so nowadays such animals are crossed with orange ones. Years of inbreeding have contributed to the development of serious physical abnormalities, such as spinal and cranial deformities, crossed eyes, increased percentage of abortions, stillbirths and infant mortalities. Although these animals are but the loveliest ones on earth, many specialists doubt the necessity to spend money on them in the times when unique normal species are tottering on the brink of extinction.

These beautiful animals are not albinos, such a coat color is just a natural mutation. It is rare, because the gene for this color is recessive. These animals have a creamy coat with chocolate stripes or no stripes at all. Their eyes are blue; the nose and paw pads are pink. These species grow faster and larger than their orange counterparts. Strangely enough, they only occur within this particular subspecies, and any suggestions about these animals being descendants of Siberians are myths. These unique animals attract large numbers of animal lovers and can be helpful in gaining additional incomes for zoos.
