The animal is found in national parks of the United States and Canada. Wood type is more populated than Plains type. Earlier, when the population of the animal was larger, the herds traveled long distances in search of food; species migration was connected with change of food plants.

There are actually two types of the animals that are the Wood type and the Plains type. They differ in size and form groups by sex, age, and habitat. These animals were originally found in prairie and at present, however, their range is very restricted. A buffalo picture water was probably not taken at a farm; the photos were probably taken in the wild.
