Elk antlers are a good hunting trophy and breeding farms may offer babies.
The species are found in open woodlands as they avoid dense forests as well as in the coniferous swamps and clear cuts. The home range of the animal is about 600 square miles. The animals are not strictly territorial and can be seen fighting only during a mating season.

Many years ago the animals were used by first settlers for their fur and meat so the species has always been a good target for hunters. At present the animals are considered as pests since they damage trees and agriculture when feeding. Therefore many of them were killed.
