The animal inhabits the northern reaches of Africa. In the wild, they tend to live in groups of 10 individuals. They are nocturnal animals. Some keep them as pets in their homes. Omnivorous animals, they should get a diversity of foods in captivity.

The main peculiarity of this species is its huge bat-like ears. Having a narrow face and a limp brush, it resembles a jackal in appearance. Its coat is yellowish-brown. There is a dark streak running through the eyes down the center of the nose, which makes the canine so recognizable.
