In the wild these animals live in large clans consisting of about 80 members. The clan is ruled by a group of related females born in this clan and forming hierarchy. The leading females mate only with the leading males.

These animals can be found mostly in South Africa. In the wild they prefer to live in open country, even semi-desert. They can be rarely found in forested areas.
