The largest population of these animals in the U.S. is found in Alaska. The species is about the size of a horse. Males are much larger than the females. The body color of the animal varies from almost black to light brown, becoming grayish in the winter.

These beautiful animals grow new racks every year. Sometime after mating season in the fall, males will lose their racks. This species is the largest member of the Cervid family. In Europe it inhabits forests in Siberia, Sweden, Norway, and the Baltic region. Moose antlers, along with moose pictures, are the biggest reason people go moose hunting.
