This species can be found only in China, where they live in the wild in evergreen and mixed temperate forests. Bamboo is the main diet for these animals, they are able to consume up to 33 pounds a day, but if bamboo is scarce, they eat other plants and dead animals.

These animals reach up to 275 pounds in weight. They have a large body, short muzzle, short legs, and large paws with long claws. Most of the body and head is covered with white fur; the saddle across the back, limbs, ears and patches around the eyes are black.
