Spotted deer with a black dorsal stripe, Axis Deer, is native to the Himalayas and surrounding areas, but is globally widespread among European settlements including the US. These Axis Deer animals seek safety in streams or rivers while inhabiting woodlands, and clearings. After introduction the Axis Deer tend to proliferate and destroy local environments. Axis Deer do well in captivity, but not if they are tightly confined and are fed hay, alfalfa, winter wheat, corn, salt and minerals.
