A symbol of free spirit and strength, American Buffalo once roamed North America in herds of millions. Developing commercial hunting and agriculture devastated them. Nearing extinction and unable to recover, nowadays, Buffalo Bison herds are found in parks and wildlife reserves. It's unlikely that wild free herds will return. Their massiveness, shoulder hump and huge head with long brown hair at the front prominently characterize them. Plains and woodland bison are the two subspecies.
