Natural to Southeast Alaska and Northeast British Columbia, Sitka deer inhabit coastal rain forests. Sometimes called Black-tail deer, they do not have much black intermingled with their other reddish or gray-brown coloration. Their antlers have typical black-tail branching. Colorblind, they "freeze" motionless if the slightest motion alerts them. Herbs, herbaceous vegetation, and shrub leaves are their main diet. Interestingly, if they eat outside their resident food, they will die of starvation on a full stomach.
