Wildebeest resemble oxen about the front quarters, antelopes about the hindquarters, and horses relative to manes and tails. Both sexes have horns; 20% heavier bodies give males their distinction. A large migratory African antelope, wildebeest travels up to 800 miles in massive herds seeking favorable grass and water. These animals communicate with deep grunts that resemble croaking frogs. Territorial bulls undergo highly ritualized and clownish challenges by pawing the ground, bucking, snorting and fighting.
Also called Gnu.
