Males of these animals are larger than females. These mammals have small heads with short noses and slit-like nostrils which can close under water. They are excellent divers and some of them can stay for 20-30 minutes under water.

These animals are found along most coasts and cold waters but their biggest numbers are in the Arctic and Antarctic waters. They spend most of their lives in water and come to land or ice only to bear and rear their pups and to shed their hair.
