Having originated from a land-based dog-like carnivore long ago, these animals became highly specialized for aquatic life. They lack external ears, have sealable nostrils, cannot walk on their hind flippers, and some species have lost most of the body coat. They are excellent graceful swimmers.

These animals are able to accumulate much fat in the body, which allows them to make long trips searching for new prey far from land. Some species are tied to their breeding sites.
