Females and males meet only when the mating period comes and females are ready for mating when they are four years old and males are ready when they are four or five years old. The gestation period lasts 3-5 months and there are about 3—4 cubs in a litter. They are born absolutely blind and helpless, and require incessant protection against enemies. They are extremely vulnerable to changes in environment and nutrition, and many of them die in infancy due to circumstances that force the mother to leave the place. These circumstances include deforestation and lack of their usual prey.

These animals are solitary ones and they have their own territories that are guarded by them and where no other animal of the same species is allowed except for the females as they always hunt with their little cubs and that is why the males do not fight them. Females are very protective around their young and do not allow males to approach the lair. Males do not participate in caring for the young, and a male copulates with the several females dwelling within his home range.
