The female gives birth to 2-4 cubs that are born blind and stay blind for about a week. Each cub weighs 2-3 pounds (1 kg) and usually one cub dies at birth. Little cats live on their mother’s milk for 6-8 weeks and do not start hunting by the time they are 1.5 years old. These animals reach puberty by 3 (females) to 4 (males) years old, and their life span is about 15 years. They have an orange coat with black stripes that camouflage them in their habitat. Most interesting, the color of the coat changes seasonally: it is bright red in summer and becomes yellowish in winter.

These animals are solitary and hunt usually alone. When the time of mating comes, males and females meet. Usually the female has to look for the male as the home ranges are extensive. These cats breed during the winter season. Males do not follow unreceptive females, and identify those in heat by the smell of the urine. Estrus lasts several days, and this is the only time when males are attracted to females. A male copulates with several females living within his home range.
