Body size of the species varies greatly depending on the diet and habitat. Adult males are usually larger than adult females. At present, these animals are found only in Tasmania. It is believed these animals became extinct on the mainland some 600 years ago.

This is the world’s largest surviving carnivorous marsupial. These animals have a thickset, squat build, with a relatively large, broad head and short, thick tail. The animal’s fur is mostly or wholly black. White markings often occur on the rump and chest of the animal.
