Tiger cats are well adapted to living in the forests and are excellent climbers. They hunt birds, land based rodents, reptiles and insects and possess a superb hearing. The average litter size is about 1-3 cubs, which are born after the gestation period of 75-78 days. Males don’t participate in raising the young. These cats live in dense tropical forests and are hard to locate. These small species are almost as small as domestic cats and are one of the smallest species of the family. They are native to Costa Rica through to Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.

These cats were excessively hunted for their beautiful pelts in the 1970’s. Nowadays, the species is protected in some parts of its range and is listed as Lower Risk (near threatened.) Though the habitat of these cats is used for coffee plantations, they can successfully adjust to human disturbance and avoid human encounters. Very little is known about the behavior and ecology of these small cats, because they are rarely seen. Like other felines, they are nocturnal and solitary, mostly terrestrial, but able to climb.
