It feeds on seeds, leaves, grass, and fruits and can do without drinking for a long time. In the 19th century their population was rather large, but today they became extinct from the mainland and remain only on Bernier and Dorre islands.

Other names of this species are Spinifex rat, Wurrup, Rufous, and some others. It is a small animal weighing up to 2 kg. It is mostly nocturnal and spends the daytime in a small burrow, which it digs for protection and shelter in hot weather.
