Adult males weigh from 57 to 140 kg and are measured from 160 to 220 cm in length. Females are a little smaller. The coat color of these animals varies from gray in winter to red-brown in summer. The tail is always white.

They inhabit northern forests, swamps and deserts, but prefer forest edges that provide enough food and good shelter.
